Greetings from Tappahannock Presbyterian Church

Greetings to all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church. Welcome to this website, and more importantly, to the Tappahannock Presbyterian Church. The door is always open to you, your family and friends.

Our worship on Sunday morning at 10:00 is a traditional Presbyterian service. We believe God created all human beings to worship and glorify Him. In fact, the very first question and answer of the Westminster Children’s Catechism is “What is the chief purpose for all human beings?” Answer: “To worship God and to enjoy Him forever.” With enthusiastic singing led by our talented pianists and choir, fervent prayers, faithful reading and interpretation of Scripture, and the commitment to serve others beyond the doors of the church, we gather in worship and scatter in mission.

Education is an integral part of the life of this church. The Bible as the Word of God is studied by preaching and discussion. Pastors must be graduates of Seminaries and are examined by the Presbytery in which they serve.

Periodically there are discussions for several weeks on the Bible, the faith, and modern day issues. These classes are led by the pastor and by highly qualified members of the congregation.

Following worship each Sunday you will be invited to stay for a coffee fellowship and continue greeting and sharing informally. In fact, many members in our congregation are still around the punch bowl and cookies an hour after the worship service.

We believe God calls all churches to serve the needs of others in the community and the world. Therefore, Tappahannock Presbyterian Church reaches out to others through special offerings and hand-on mission projects. Your God-given gifts and talents will add greatly to those of our congregation already in motion. There is something for everyone!

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you into this small but dynamic group of people who worship, study, fellowship and serve in the name of Christ.

Every member of this little congregation participates in some way in outreach missions, whether it is with time or financial support. In 2011 the participation in Inasmuch missionOperation Inasmuch was over half of the congregation. Over $2500 was given to support this one-day event. The congregation is generous with giving when it comes to the four Presbyterian offerings: the Joy Gift, the Peace Offering, the Pentecost Offering, and the One Great Hour of Sharing. The 5 cents a meal offering is received the third Sunday of each month and food is brought in for the local food bank on that day. There is quick response to special requests such as peanut butter and jelly for children during the summer months.

Each year the church sponsors the children of the congregation to Camp Hanover. Equally important, there are 4-6 children from the community sponsored for the camp as well. Tappahannock Presbyterian was instrumental in the development and leadership of an interdenominational council of churches called Essex Churches Together (ECT ). See more details on another page.

Christian Education Tappahannock Presbyterian There is a ministry to each other as well through the Fellowship and Congregational Care Ministry. Members share times of joy as well as times of need. A baby shower and new freezer helped prepare for a new baby in the church family. Graduation gifts are given to young people completing high school. Members of the congregation chartered a bus to attend the memorial service of a member who also resided in Alexandria. The congregation is an intimate group with a special bond which is extended to all who come to worship. Refreshments are brought by a different family every Sunday to enjoy after the 10:00 service. A Christmas dinner is held in someone’s home and for the last two years a Progressive Dinner has been held at 4 homes. A knitting group meets monthly to make prayer shawls and pray together. Everyone who comes to knit is not a member of the church, but everyone is welcome and encouraged to join when they are ready. Occasionally there are trips together to a dinner theater or other entertainment.

The One-Room School House PC-USA Curriculum is taught to children from 5 to 12 years of age every Sunday. Teens participate in morning worship by taking up collections, lay reading, and serving as acolytes.

WHAT IS A PRESBYTERIAN AND WHAT DO PRESBYTERIANS BELIEVE?

Presbyterians are characterized most readily by their form of government. Presbyterian means, rule by elders, that is, governance is accomplished largely through decisions made jointly by presbyters (elders and ministers of the Word and Sacrament, traditionally called “ruling elders” and “teaching elders,” respectively). This principle applies to each level of the church, from the local congregation, to the regional bodies called presbyteries and synods, to the national body called the General Assembly. Doctrinally, Presbyterians share the basic views of traditional Christianity. For instance, we believe in the triune God, the authority of scripture, and that salvation comes through faith alone. We are particularly strengthened by the idea of God's sovereignty. Our beliefs are most fully expressed in a document entitled The Book of Confessions. This is a collection of eleven theological statements that have been adopted at various times by churches of the Protestant Reformed tradition from the sixteenth century to the present.

WHAT IS THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ( USA )?

Presbyterians are characterized by their form of government, a representative democracy governed by elders elected from and by the congregation.

Presbyterians embrace the faith common to all Christians: that God exists in the Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and that Christ is the revealer of God who came to earth in human form and sacrificed His own life for the salvation of those who believe in Him. Presbyterians believe in God the Creator of the Universe and in the Holy Spirit which is the presence of God in the world and in the believer. We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, the church is the universal company of Christ's followers, and the forgiveness of sin and life everlasting.
